 Site Location

The Weymouth Neck Landfill, a former fertilizer plant landfill located on the southeast portion of the Weymouth Neck, is the primary focus of the TOSC project. TOSC has also worked with the community to address other contaminated areas located throughout the peninsula.

 Site Description
A succession of fertilizer companies occupied the Weymouth Neck Peninsula, an area of about 65 acres, until 1996. During this time, much waste was disposed of in the Weymouth Neck Landfill area. Consequently, the area contains metals contamination such as arsenic, chromium, mercury, and barium. All buildings on site have been demolished.
 Community Partner Organization
The Friends of Webb State Park and Back River is a group of Weymouth residents promoting the remediation of the Weymouth Neck Landfill. Friends has been working toward the goal of site remediation since the early 1980s.

Tufts University leads the project. NJ Institute of Technology provides support as needed.

 Summary of TOSC Assistance
TOSC has completed the first phase of technical assistance. Tufts staff reviewed numerous documents provided by Friends and 1) compiled a report summarizing the history and environmental activity that has occurred on the Neck and 2) provided education to Friends members regarding important technical issues raised in the documents. The report included a technical review of potential remedial options. Friends presented this summary to the USEPA, who has since decided to conduct initial assessment work on the Neck in order to determine its CERCLA ranking. Tufts also provided technical assistance to Friends at various public meetings and via the telephone.

During the second phase of the Weymouth project, TOSC will continue to provide educational assistance via phone and at meetings as appropriate. TOSC will also review and comment on all technical documents pertaining to the site that are released before the year 2000. As necessary, TOSC will summarize documents in a format that can be easily understood and utilized by Friends
